Tiny T (The Mighty Cloudburst)

Tennyson Goulbourne, aka ‘Tiny T’, has been steeped in music since childhood. The roots of his lifelong obsession lie in ‘Freddy Cloudburst’, the trail-blazing sound system formed by his father and uncle in Kingston, Jamaica. Freddy and Eddy were youthful friends and devotees of both Duke Reid and Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd, whose Downbeat set-up proved a guiding force in their musical development. After moving to London in 1955, they swiftly established a fiefdom south of the river, holding the corner for Cloudburst with residencies at Mr. Bee’s in Peckham and Cloud’s/The Ram Jam in Brixton. Amongst his lasting legacies, Freddy was an early champion of a youth now known as Jah Shaka.

Tennyson Goulbourne (別名Tiny T)は子供の頃から音楽に夢中だった。そのルーツは、彼の父親と叔父がジャマイカのキングストンで始めた先駆的なサウンド・システム、Freddy Cloudburstにあるだろう。FreddyとEddyは幼馴染であり、二人ともDuke ReidやClement ‘Coxsone’ Doddの熱狂的ファンでもあった。Downbeatのシステムは、彼らの音楽的発達に大きな影響を与えた。1955年にロンドンへ引越ししてからPeckhamのMr. Bee’sやBrixtonのCloud’s/The Ram Jamでレギュラーイベントを始めることによって、南ロンドンの音楽シーンを瞬く間に支配した。Freddyが残したたくさんの遺産の中には、当時まだ青年であったJah Shakaを育てて来たこともある。

Freddy emigrated to Miami in the mid 1980s, by which time Tiny T had begun to excite interest on the protean musical underground of South London. Alongside his twin brother Terry, T built up a formidable collection of rare and crucial blank pressings spanning the early sound system staples of imported R&B, the scorching sounds of ska and rocksteady and the burgeoning development of roots and culture.

80年代半ば、Freddyはマイアミに移住したが、南ロンドンの多様なアンダーグラウンド・シーンでTiny Tは既に評判になっていた。初期のサウンドで定番であったアメリカから輸入されたR&Bから、SkaやRocksteady、その時生まれつつあったRoots and Cultureに至るまで、双子のTerryと共に恐るべきレコードのコレクションを築き上げてきた。

Leaving the business to focus on family and career, T has never ceased in his search for melodic gold. Unlike many Revival selectors, he keeps a close watch on the latest releases, and occasionally peppers his set with tasteful, modern-day interpretations of classic tunes. With impeccable judgment, and an encyclopedic knowledge of rhythms, Tiny T and his revitalized Mighty Cloudburst are poised to take their rightful place at the forefront of Revival scene.

家族や仕事のために、彼はシーンから身を引くことになったが、未だに音楽の宝を求め続けている。殆どのリバイバル・セレクターと違って、Newリリースにも注目しており、クラシック・チューンの最新カバーなどもプレイする。Tiny Tと再結成されたMighty Cloudburstは、申し分のないセンスと豊富なリディムへの知識で、今後リバイバルシーンへの前線復帰を果たすことは間違いない。
